In a remarkable display of inclusivity and empowerment, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has given the green light for the automatic employment of 15 individuals living with disabilities. These deserving individuals, who have diligently pursued formal education and obtained various academic and vocational qualifications, will now have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society.
During a meeting with members of the Association of People Living with Disability at the Government House in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum commended the determination and resilience shown by these individuals despite the challenges they face. He emphasized their commitment to education and pledged to ensure their integration into the workforce.
“I am delighted to note that despite your disability, you people are not lazy; you decided to pursue your education, and for this, I want to commend you,” Governor Zulum expressed.
With immediate effect from May 1, 2024, these 15 individuals will be officially employed by the Borno State Government, marking a significant milestone in their lives. Governor Zulum directed the Commissioner of Education to expedite the processing of their employment applications, underscoring his administration’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities for all citizens.
Moreover, Governor Zulum has taken proactive steps to enhance the education and training opportunities available to persons with disabilities in Borno State. He instructed the Ministry of Education to assess and strengthen blind schools across the state, aiming to expand educational opportunities for more individuals with disabilities.
Additionally, the Governor mandated the Ministry of Education to develop plans for introducing special education courses at the College of Education in Bama. By offering specialized training in special education, the College will play a pivotal role in equipping future educators with the skills and knowledge needed to support students with disabilities effectively.
Alhaji Muhammed Mustapha, Borno Branch Chairman of the Nigerian Association of the Blind, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Zulum for his unwavering support and commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities. He lauded the Governor for prioritizing initiatives aimed at uplifting the living standards of individuals with disabilities and fostering inclusivity in society.
