The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has taken a strong stance on addressing maritime security issues in his administration. With the rise in oil theft and other illegal activities in Nigeria’s waters, Tinubu has recognized the urgent need for action.
Under his leadership, the Nigerian Navy launched “Operation Delta Sanity” to enhance maritime surveillance. This has led to the apprehension of over 14 rogue oil vessels in Rivers State in the first quarter of this year. Furthermore, 90 barges, 74 suspects, and numerous companies and organizations have been arrested for their involvement in illegal activities in Nigerian waters, underscoring Tinubu’s serious approach to maritime security.
One key component of Tinubu’s strategy is the establishment and training of the Maritime Security Unit Forces. These forces play a crucial role in combatting illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, piracy, illegal fishing, and water trespassing. Graduates of these forces, who have received professional combat training, will be well-equipped to address these challenges and uphold the nation’s peace and economic prosperity.
A graduation ceremony was recently held for the first batch of the Maritime Security Unit Forces, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of the Deep Blue Project. This project, launched in 2018, aims to bolster Nigeria’s maritime security through collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and other agencies.
It is commendable to see President Tinubu taking proactive steps to address Nigeria’s maritime security challenges. His launch of Operation Delta Sanity and establishment of the Maritime Security Unit Forces demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding the nation’s waters and protecting its citizens’ interests.
Moreover, Tinubu’s efforts have also exposed the involvement of corporate entities and individuals in illegal maritime activities, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in the maritime sector. Tinubu’s administration is making meaningful progress in this regard.
With the establishment and training of the Maritime Security Unit Forces and the implementation of the Deep Blue Project, we can expect to see a significant reduction in illegal activities in Nigeria’s waters. This will not only benefit the economy but also ensure the safety and security of the nation’s citizens and resources.
