UN Women Report Highlights Global Gender Disparity in Head of State Roles

In a recent report, UN Women revealed stark statistics regarding the representation of women in global leadership positions. According to the report, 113 countries have never had a woman serve as Head of State, while currently, only 26 nations are led by women.

This data underscores significant gender disparities in political leadership worldwide. As countries around the globe gear up for elections in 2024, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous emphasized the critical need to prioritize women’s leadership. Bahous noted that placing women at the forefront of political power is not only a matter of gender equality but also crucial for addressing the complex challenges facing our world today.

The report coincides with the International Day for Women in Diplomacy, celebrating women who break barriers and drive change in diplomatic arenas. Despite some progress, women remain underrepresented in key decision-making roles. As of January 1, 2024, women constitute less than a third of Cabinet ministers in 141 countries, with seven nations having no female representation in their Cabinets at all. Furthermore, only 23% of ministerial positions globally are held by women.

Bahous stressed that electing and appointing women to leadership positions signals strong political commitment to gender equality and enhances collective efforts to tackle global issues effectively. She highlighted the importance of women’s equal participation in governance, stating that it is essential for improving societal outcomes and promoting sustainable development.

Looking ahead to the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Bahous reaffirmed UN Women’s dedication to advancing women’s rights and ensuring their significant roles in shaping positive global change. The Beijing conference, held in 1995, marked a pivotal moment in advocating for gender equality and removing barriers hindering women’s participation across all spheres of public and private life.

As the world continues to strive for gender parity in leadership, UN Women remains committed to empowering women to lead and thrive, advocating for their full and equal participation in decision-making processes globally.
