NCC Orders MTN and Others to Reconnect Lines Amid NIN-SIM Linkage Issues

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has mandated the reconnection of MTN lines and other affected telecom services following recent mass disconnections tied to the National Identification Number (NIN) and Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) linkage.

Over the past weekend, many subscribers experienced disruptions as their lines were blocked due to incomplete NIN-SIM verifications. This disconnection is in accordance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy, which began in December 2020, requiring telecom companies to link SIM cards to verified NINs.

Despite several deadline extensions—initially set for April 15, 2024, and later revised to July 31, 2024—many lines remain unlinked. This policy aims to bolster national security and ensure an accurate SIM ownership database.

In response to the inconvenience caused, the NCC has instructed telecom operators to temporarily reconnect the affected lines. This measure provides consumers additional time to complete their NIN-SIM linkage.

Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, emphasized that consumers should promptly verify their details to avoid future disruptions. The reconnections are temporary, and it is crucial for subscribers to ensure their NINs are properly linked to their SIMs to maintain access to their services.
