Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha Leads the Charge on Workplace Gender Equality

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, is actively working to advance gender equality and address workplace discrimination. Recently, the Ministry collaborated with Oxfam Nigeria to host a two-day workshop in Abuja focused on the Nigeria Workplace Gender Policy (NWPGP). This initiative highlights a commitment to ensuring equal opportunities and protections for all workers, regardless of gender.

During the workshop’s opening ceremony, Onyejeocha emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive work environment by actively addressing discrimination. She stated that the workshop aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively advocate for gender equality. By aligning with the NWPGP principles, the training is designed to empower participants to influence workplace policies and practices that promote gender equity.

Onyejeocha’s statements reflect a broader strategy by the Nigerian government to integrate gender considerations into labor policies. She referenced International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions that focus on eliminating discrimination and promoting equal opportunities, demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to upholding global standards. The Minister’s proactive approach indicates that gender equality is not only crucial for social justice but also for enhancing productivity and economic growth.

The workshop attracted various stakeholders, including Oxfam Country Director John Makina, who noted that this initiative represents a significant step toward creating equitable workplaces in Nigeria. Makina emphasized the role of advocates and policymakers in shaping policies that promote gender equality, stressing the need for collective efforts to close the gender pay gap and establish safe, inclusive workplaces.

The initiatives led by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment demonstrate a strong commitment to gender equality and workplace inclusivity in Nigeria. Collaborating with organizations like Oxfam to promote the NWPGP, the government is paving the way for meaningful change that aims to empower women and enhance Nigeria’s workforce productivity and competitiveness, ultimately contributing to national economic development.
