Tinkering with Education is Tinkering with Our Future — SGF George Akume Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Education Reform

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has reiterated the Nigerian Government’s unwavering commitment to improving the nation’s education sector, stressing the importance of education in national development. Akume made this assertion during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities (CAANU), led by its President, Prof. Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, in Abuja.

During the meeting, Senator Akume emphasized that no nation can make meaningful progress without substantial investment in education. He noted that the current administration, under President Bola Tinubu, is prioritizing access to quality education for all Nigerians, regardless of their socioeconomic status. According to Akume, “A nation that toys with education toys with the destiny of its citizens. President Tinubu believes that every Nigerian, irrespective of status, should have access to quality education.”

Akume commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its continuous efforts in improving educational infrastructure across the country, particularly in tertiary institutions located in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He also highlighted that ongoing reforms will ensure that industrial action becomes a thing of the past, urging educational leaders to prioritize dialogue over strikes when addressing institutional challenges.

Senator Akume reassured CAANU that the government is dedicated to strengthening the education system and ending the cycle of industrial actions, which have disrupted academic activities in the past. He encouraged the association to work hand-in-hand with the government in supporting the development of tertiary institutions, a move that will lead to enhanced educational standards and better outcomes for students across the country.

Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, the President of CAANU, used the opportunity to highlight the association’s goals, which include seeking stronger collaboration with the government to enhance the value of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. He praised Senator Akume’s exemplary leadership and political journey, which will be chronicled in a soon-to-be-published biography titled *George Akume: Legacy of Service, Leadership, and Vision*. The book, he explained, will serve as an inspiration for Nigerians, showcasing Akume’s dedication to public service and national development.

Ochefu also appealed to the Federal Government to consider members of alumni associations for appointments to the governing councils of federal tertiary institutions and other federal boards, as well as for national honors. He further urged the government to support the National Alumni Day, an initiative aimed at uniting alumni associations across Nigeria in a shared commitment to education and national progress.

A significant moment during the visit was the presentation of the biography *George Akume: Legacy of Service, Leadership, and Vision* by CAANU, a gesture that celebrated Akume’s contributions to public service, particularly in the education sector. The SGF expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his resolve to continue championing educational reforms in Nigeria.

The courtesy visit further strengthened the relationship between the government and alumni associations, signaling a collective push towards improving the education sector and ensuring that the youth of Nigeria receive the quality education they deserve.
