The Super Eagles have been pulled out of their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya following a 12-hour ordeal at Al Abraq International Airport. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the decision on Monday after the team faced frustrating conditions without food, proper rest, or assistance.
The Nigerian delegation was en route to Benghazi when their chartered flight was unexpectedly diverted mid-air to Al Abraq Airport, a small facility typically used for hajj operations. Since landing, the team and officials have received no support from the Libyan Football Federation, leaving them stranded and without transportation.
Captain William Troost-Ekong voiced his frustration, condemning the poor treatment of the national team. He also shared photos of distressed teammates, shedding light on the difficult conditions they endured.
Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface lamented the lack of food and proper sleeping arrangements during the ordeal. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation, aiming to resolve the crisis.
The incident has sparked outrage among fans and officials, with calls for better handling of logistical arrangements and safety measures for the players. As the Confederation of African Football (CAF) remains silent on the matter, the fate of the disrupted qualifier remains uncertain.
