A Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicle exploded at the NIPCO filling station in Aduwawa, Benin, Edo State, on Wednesday, injuring three individuals. Among the injured is a motorist with eye injuries, a woman whose stomach was torn open, and another person who suffered a foot amputation due to the blast. All victims are currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Ugbowo.
The incident was reportedly caused by a fabricated gas cylinder made by a welder without proper approval. The welder has since surrendered to the police.
Eyewitnesses confirmed the explosion occurred while vehicles were queuing to refill gas cylinders. A technician was later seen inspecting cylinders to prevent further incidents.
The station manager declined to comment on the situation, but UBTH’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed that the man with the eye injury is in stable condition.
