How Okada riders killed Lagos cop – Eyewitnesses
Eyewitnesses have described how on Wednesday, in the Cele-Ijesha region of Lagos State, a yet-to-be-identified policeman was killed by raging commercial motorcycle riders, also known as Okada riders.
At the time of the event, it was reported that the Okada riders were protesting the locality’s implementation of the law banning commercial motorcycle activities.
According to information obtained by Propolitics, a Divisional Police Officer who was reportedly a member of the squad responsible for implementing the prohibition in the neighborhood was also hurt during the altercation by the motorcycle riders.
It was discovered that the policemen approached a biker traveling the Mile 2-Cele axis during the enforcement on Wednesday about
When police attempted to take the motorcycle, the rider protested, and other riders who were there at the time interfered to defend their colleague. This led to a confrontation with the police officers.
One of the cops tried to use his gun during the altercation to frighten the motorcycle and his companions away, according to an eyewitness who did not want his name published for security concerns, who also said that the motorcyclists overcame the policeman and killed him.
The eyewitness said, “The policemen were trying to arrest one of the motorcycle riders shuttling the Cele-Ijesha and Mile 2 areas. It was while the motorcyclist was resisting arrest that other motorcyclists intervened and demanded the release of their colleague’s motorcycle.
“When the policemen refused and tried to drive the motorcyclists away, they refused to back down and stopped the policemen from leaving the spot. Then, one of the policemen tried to scare them away with his gun but they overpowered him and killed him.”
Another witness, who only went by the name Dehinde, claimed that the police officers hastily departed the scene when they learned that their comrade had been killed.
He said, “Immediately the policeman was killed, his colleagues who ran away called for reinforcement, and by the time they returned, the motorcyclists had fled. They were also seen brandishing different weapons while leaving the scene of the clash.”
As traders and commuters fled to safety in order to escape injury, the altercation raised tension in the neighborhood.
In response to the development, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police’s public relations officer, stated that two individuals had been taken into custody and that 41 motorcycles had been seized.
