Both Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party and Abdul-Azeez Adediran, alias Jandor, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, have petitioned the Lagos State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal to have the results of the state’s March 18 governorship election, which were won by incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress, declared invalid.
Rhodes-Vivour requested that the tribunal annul Sanwo-Olu’s victory in his petition with the filing date of April 9, 2023 and the file number EPT/LAG/GOV/04/2023 on the grounds that the APC candidate was ineligible to participate in the election.
Sanwo-Olu’s declaration as the victor, according to the LP candidate’s appeal, “was invalid due to corrupt practices or non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.” A majority of the valid votes cast in the election did not result in the second respondent being legitimately elected.
Similarly, the PDP candidate Jandor said in his appeal that Sanwo-Olu and his running mate Obafemi Hamzat were ineligible to run at the time of the election.
Adediran claimed that Rhodes-Vivour, the LP candidate who was announced as the first runner-up, was also unable to run for office.
Jandor is pleading with the tribunal to deem all votes cast for the APC and LP to be invalid.
In addition to the PDP and the LP, the Allied People’s Movement and the Action People’s Party also submitted petitions to contest the results of the governorship election.
