Coronation: Bauchi protesters kill 70-year-old man, burn 64 houses

In Sang village in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, a communal fight over the crowning of a hamlet head resulted in the death of a 70-year-old man on Saturday.

The incident, which occurred at around 7 o’clock, resulted in scores of people—including a 65-year-old—sustaining various degrees of harm.

Also reportedly set flames were 64 residences, three motorcycles, and other items worth millions of naira.

Ahmed Wakil, the public relations officer for the Bauchi State Police Command, confirmed the occurrence in a statement on Sunday.

The statement was titled, “CP orders for a full-scale investigation, cautions against any knee-jerk reactions to the disturbance of public peace in Bogoro.”

Wakil, a Superintendent of Police, said the command’s operatives, including Tactical teams, Rapid Response Squad, and Operation Restore Peace, were deployed to the area to maintain law and order. He said the state Commissioner of Police, Aminu Alhassan, has ordered a full investigation.

The police spokesman reported that tranquility had returned to the neighborhood and claimed that the CP had urged locals to maintain peace.

He said, “On April 15, 2023, around 7pm, the Bauchi State Police Command received a distress call over ongoing skirmishes in the Bogoro area of the state.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the communal clash in Sang village of Bogoro Local Government Area emanated from the coronation of the hamlet head of Sang.

“Some irate youths with different functions protested against the coronation. Consequently, this resulted in an attack on innocent citizens, as the irate youths set 64 houses, three motorcycles and belongings worth millions of naira ablaze.

“One person, Apollos Danlami, 70, was killed in the incident while a certain Naemiya Bature, 65, and some other people were injured in the fracas.”

According to Wakil, police officers are presently policing the affected region to maintain law and order.

He further stated that actions were being taken to apprehend the offenders.
