Onyekachi Agu, a 32-year-old carpenter who threw acid on his ex-girlfriend and a rival, was given a seven-year prison sentence on Wednesday by the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.
After finding Agu guilty on a count of causing serious bodily harm to two people—Aishat Adefarati and Mansur Ahmed—in 2020, Justice Oyindamola Ogala imposed the prison sentence.
Agu committed the offense on July 3, 2020, at the Gangare Hotel, Mile 12, in Lagos, according to the state prosecutor, Uju Uwangaze, who testified in court during his arraignment.
She claimed that Agu found the victims at the hotel and doused them in acid.
The prosecution claims that the offense violated Section 245 of the Lagos State Criminal Law from 2015.
However, the defendant denied the accusation leveled against him.
Using the defendant’s confessional statement as the foundation for her decision, Justice Ogala found the defendant guilty and punished him accordingly.
“The defendant is hereby sentenced to imprisonment of seven years with hard labour and the sentence is to run concurrently,” the judge ruled.
