Linda David, 24, was given a two-year prison term on Thursday by a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for stealing undergarments.
David was given a punishment by the magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, after she admitted guilt and requested compassion.
However, he offered her a choice of an N40,000 fine and cautioned her against leading a life of crime.
He claimed that the verdict will function as a deterrent to those who would desire to commit such a criminal crime.
The defendant was accused of stealing undergarments worth N115, 000 on a single count.
David committed the offense on May 12 at Trinity Supermarket along Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna, according to the prosecution, Insp. Chidi Leo.
Leo claims that the accused entered the store and stole 15 bras, 20 pairs of boxers, and 20 pairs of pants, totaling N115,000.
He claimed that the defendant was apprehended and turned over to the police by the supermarket security guard who discovered she had concealed some of the stolen goods under her clothing.
The prosecutor further stated that the offense violated Section 217 of Kaduna State’s 2017 Penal Code.
