On Wednesday, Labour Party (LP) candidate for president Peter Obi requested a postponement of his suit contesting President Bola Tinubu’s victory.
The five-member panel of the court, led by Haruna Tsammani, was informed by Mr. Obi’s attorney, Awa Kalu, that owing to “an unexpected development,” he would be seeking an adjournment until Thursday.
Professor of law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Kalu, also revealed that two members of the legal team became unwell.
Mr. Kalu pleaded with the court, saying, “I am forced to pray for an adjournment until tomorrow (Thursday).”
Wole Olanipekun for Mr. Tinubu, Lateef Fagbemi for the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Abubakar Mahmoud for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the attorneys representing the defendants in the lawsuit, did not object to Mr. Kalu’s motion for an adjournment.
The panel’s chairman, Mr. Tsammani, did tell Mr. Obi’s legal team that they were over their permitted time, though.
“If you ask for an adjournment, you are eating into your time,” Mr Tsammani said.
The lawsuit was then postponed until Thursday for a new hearing.
