Bolt, Uber, other ride-hailing drivers begin nationwide strike

On Wednesday, a nationwide strike by taxi drivers, including those for Uber, Bolt, LagRide, and Indriver, started.

Ride-hailing drivers are adhering to a sit-at-home directive issued by the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transport Workers of Nigeria until the ride-hailing companies increase their base prices by 200 percent.

Kolawole Aina, the National Vice President of AUATWON for Southwest Nigeria, said that the drivers intended to picket the Bolt and Uber headquarters in Lekki and Victoria Island.

Despite the strike, which is scheduled to go till Friday, our reporter was able to locate a driver on the Bolt app who claimed to be five minutes away from the Propolitics Headquarters in Ogun state to someplace in Ikeja, Lagos.
AUATWON is requesting, among other things, that ride-hailing businesses raise their prices by a minimum of 200%.

The union is also requesting an end to the deactivation of drivers who refuse to work because of the low fares and resulting unprofitability, as well as a 50% drop in commission (Uber and Bolt charge 20% commission on each ride).

The union is also requesting that AUATWON be acknowledged as their official representative organization.
