Things not working because Nigeria copied American constitution – Bode George

Chief Bode George, a former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, claimed on Tuesday that Nigeria’s problems stem from the country’s constitution, which was modeled after the American one.

The PDP leader made the declaration while serving as a guest speaker at the Fifth Year Lecture hosted by SWAAYA Limited, the company that publishes the online news platform Freedom.

The lecture had as its title “2023-2027: Nigerians, Elected Leaders, and Expectations.”

George stated during the event that the Nigerian constitution “is military in setting” and needs to be reviewed. The event was held at the Function Suite, Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State.

He said, “Having served that long in the military, I can authoritatively confirm to you that the Nigerian constitution is absolutely military in setting. In the military, orders come from top to bottom.

“But in a democratic dispensation, powers come from the people to the top. But we have copied the American constitution, and that’s why things are not working. We must be deceiving ourselves if we think that this constitution will take us to the promised land.”

The PDP leader endorsed state policing as a means of securing the nation and noted that it would be highly effective.
