Nigeria is now a member of the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA).
This is in recognition of its groundbreaking contributions to data privacy and security.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signature on the Nigeria Data Protection Bill was a critical component in Nigeria’s admittance to the prestigious Assembly.
Similarly, the establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission as the country’s independent data protection authority under the Act was a key factor in establishing the country’s data protection adequacy.
The decision on Nigeria’s accreditation was made during the 45th Global Privacy Assembly Closed Session, which will be held in Bermuda from October 15th to October 20th, 2023.
GPA, founded in 1979, aims to provide an international forum for coordinating cross-border activities to promote data privacy and protection.

Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner/CEO, NDPC, expressed hope that the Federal Government’s commitment on digital transformation is having beneficial effects upon learning of Nigeria’s membership in the GPA.
He urged Data Processing ecosystem players to maintain a high degree of care while managing personal data.
