Blackout Hits Nigeria as National Grid Collapses

Nigeria is experiencing a statewide blackout as a result of another national grid meltdown.

In a statement published on its X account, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, or AEDC, stated that the power outage occurring in its franchise regions on Sunday at 11:21 a.m. was caused by a system breakdown from the national grid.

The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) would like to notify its esteemed customers that the statewide power outage that is now occurring is due to a system failure from the national grid that occurred at 11:21 a.m. today, February 4, 2024.

The statement continued, “Be assured that as soon as the grid is stabilized, we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power.”

The evolution occurs following a decline in the nation’s overall electricity supply due to restrictions on the supply of gas to enterprises that generate electricity.

At least three national blackouts affected Nigerians in 2023 on September 14, 19, and December 11.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with the government over issues plaguing the nation’s electricity sector just two days ago, as the PROPOLITICSNG recounts.
