The Rivers State Police Command verified that its officers had been murdered by thugs in Port Harcourt. SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the police command’s spokesman, confirmed the tragedy yesterday and said that the police officer lost his life in a gunfight with the criminals who had ambushed him and his colleagues during a stop and search operation near the Eliozu Flyover.
Iringe-Koko stated: “We are really sorry to report a horrific event that happened on February 21, 2024, involving an attack on police officers affiliated with the Rivers State Police Command’s Operation Sting.
“During a regular stop and search at Eliozu Flyover at approximately 9:45 p.m., the officers were ambushed by anonymous criminals driving a carton-colored Sienna bus and wearing completely tinted glasses. The license plate numberof the car is still unknown at this moment.
“The attackers drove in from the Rumuodumaya axis, opened fire on the police team, resulting in the tragic loss of one inspector who valiantly gave his life in the line of duty undeterred,” the police official stated.
“The police team acted bravely in battling the attackers and stopping one of them with a face mask while the others were able to flee and possibly suffered gunshot wounds.”
Iringe-Koko further disclosed that the command has already identified the group accountable for the crime and has begun a comprehensive inquiry into it.
