LAGOS—Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, yesterday lent support to the demands that Nigeria return to a parliamentary form of government, arguing that the country’s presidential system is too costly and rife with corruption.
Adebanjo talked during an Arise Television interview.
“Those of us who have had experience with this country’s parliamentary system see that it’s the only way out,” he said. Particularly in Nigeria, the corrupt presidential system turns the president into a despot.
The president becomes a dictator where no one can overthrow him the moment he is elected, therefore any doubts about his dominance are only valid before to the election. The law is his word.
In Nigeria specifically, our constitution designates the president as the most powerful
the globe. The system is corrupt and overpriced. The sooner we go back, the better.
The prime minister is held more accountable in the parliamentary system as the parliament is his boss. The prime minister is a peer by virtue of his title. Since the ministers are elected representatives from their constituencies, the parliament will interrogate him if he misbehaves.
A parliamentary system has numerous benefits. It is a positive development that ought to be put into effect right away, and the constitution has to be amended.
