Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation: Transforming Lives, Ensuring Prosperity

With unwavering determination and visionary leadership, Minister Utsev has embarked on a transformative journey to ensure that every Nigerian has access to safe water and adequate sanitation facilities, also a  resounding testament to the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation towards fostering socio-economic development, a significant milestone was achieved with the commissioning of the Odo-Ape Dam project in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. 

 Spearheaded by the Honourable Minister, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, FNSE, this initiative marks a monumental stride towards realizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and addressing the imperative declaration of a state of emergency on food security across the nation.

On Wednesday, 28th February 2024, Minister Utsev, accompanied by a host of dignitaries, inaugurated the Odo-Ape Dam, underscoring its pivotal role in catalyzing economic growth, fostering job creation, and eradicating poverty. In his address, the Minister emphasized the intrinsic value of water resources in driving various sectors crucial for national development, including agriculture, industry, and sanitation. The commissioning of the Odo-Ape Dam exemplifies the unwavering commitment of the current administration to harnessing Nigeria’s water potential for year-round farming and enhancing food production.

Crucially, Minister Utsev reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to addressing the fundamental needs of the populace, particularly in the realms of potable water, sanitation, hygiene, and food security. He pledged continued collaboration with state governments, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as development partners and communities, to actualize the Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring tangible benefits for all Nigerians.

Highlighting the Ministry’s proactive stance, Minister Utsev outlined a robust Monitoring and Evaluation framework to ensure transparency and accountability in project execution. Emphasizing sustainable water supply management, sanitation, and hygiene, he affirmed the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to fostering a healthy and economically empowered society.

The operationalization of the Odo-Ape Dam represents a significant leap towards poverty alleviation and socio-economic well-being. Its impact extends beyond the immediate community to encompass the broader landscape of Kogi State, fostering food security and economic prosperity. Minister Utsev extended heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State, and the traditional rulers for their unwavering support. Special appreciation was also extended to stakeholders, including the contractor, consultant, and the Management of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority.

Furthermore, Minister Utsev announced the donation of a solar-powered irrigation pump to the community, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and empowering farmers. This gesture was met with commendation from various quarters, including Kogi State Security Adviser, Navy Commander Jerry Omodara Rtd, who lauded the project’s potential to revolutionize food production in the region.

Dr. Adeniyi Saheed Aremu, Managing Director of Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, echoed Minister Utsev’s sentiments, reaffirming the Authority’s dedication to improving the quality of life for Nigerians through strategic water resources development policies. He emphasized the transformative impact of the Odo-Ape project in expanding irrigation capabilities and enhancing agricultural productivity across Kogi and Kwara States.

The commissioning of the Odo-Ape Dam stands as a testament to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation’s unwavering commitment to transforming lives, ensuring prosperity, and charting a course towards a more sustainable and resilient future for all Nigerians.
