BREAKING: Buhari seeks Senate’s approval to pay N226bn, $556.8m, £98.5m judgement debts

The Senate has been tasked with approving a request from President Major General Muhammadu Buhari to pay a judgment debt in the amount of $566,754,584.31, £98,526,012.00, and N226 billion.

According to Propolitics, the Federal Government issued promissory notes in order to pay the debt.

On Wednesday, Senate President Ahmad Lawan read Buhari’s letter of request during the plenary session.

There were 648 charges launched against the president and various FG parastatals, according to a January report from Propolitics.

According to Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the government has successfully prosecuted 7,000 criminal and anti-corruption cases over the course of eight years, while 397 terrorism charges have resulted in convictions.

The AGF reports that out of 3,000 accusations with terrorism profiles, only 1,500 were actually submitted.

“A total of 7,000 cases involving various offences, including maritime, armed robbery, vandalism of electrical equipment and pipelines, financial matters, cybercrime, kidnapping, and anti-corruption, have been successfully prosecuted,” the AGF disclosed while presenting the scorecard for the Federal Ministry of Justice from 2015 to date.

The establishment of an inter-ministerial management committee for the eradication of gender-based violence cases was among the important advancements in the fight against gender-based violence during the time under review, according to the AGF.

He also revealed that the sale of confiscated properties brought in N1,823,788,146.86 for the government.

Similar to this, the AGF reported that “the Ministry has recovered the total sums of £6,324,627.66, €5,494,743.71, and $390,000,000 from various jurisdictions in compliance with presidential mandates and foreign legal processes.
