The trial of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has reportedly been postponed until Wednesday, May 24, 2023 by Justice Adeola Olatubosun of the Chief Magistrates Court in Yaba, Lagos State.
According to a source who requested anonymity and spoke to Propolitics on condition of anonymity, the judge’s absence from the court caused the trial, which was scheduled for today, May 23, 2023, to be postponed.
“The trial has been adjourned till tomorrow, May 24, 2023, because the judge is not around, the source said.
The manager of Seun Kuti couldn’t be reached as of the time of this report since his phone was off.
However, when Propolitics contacted Seun’s older sister, Yeni Kuti, who is currently abroad, she admitted that she was unaware of the adjournment as of the time of this story.
“I have no knowledge of the adjournment, his wife has not reached out to me today; she has not sent me an SMS to that effect; none of them has sent me a text yet. But I will call the wife now, you can call me back in 10 minutes,” Yeni told our correspondent on a WhatsApp call.
Recall that Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, had ordered Seun Kuti’s arrest after he had attacked a police officer on the Third Mainland bridge.
In the presence of his attorney and a family spokesperson, the afrobeat musician later turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, and was subsequently moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, where he was ultimately incarcerated.
