At the Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, two artisans were killed and four others suffered critical injuries on Wednesday when the fence of a nearby building collapsed on them.
The men who were allegedly working on a structure that was still in the foundation were reportedly encroaching on the fence of a neighboring structure when a portion of it collapsed on them.
The injured had been transferred to the hospital, according to Alhaji Abbas Idriss, Director General of the Federal Capital Territory FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, who confirmed the occurrence over the phone.
He explained, “Between 10 and 11 am, we received a distress call informing us that a building in Wuse 2 had collapsed, and we immediately dispatched our rescue team to the area. When they arrived, they saw that the artisans who were nearby were injured by a wall. Six persons have been extracted from the rubble thus far; two of them suffered fatal injuries, while four others are now being treated in hospitals. 2 persons passed away.
“The cause is that the developer encroached into another building, that is, the UBA building and the wall fell on them”.
Idriss clarified that there was no evidence of the use of subpar materials when it came to efforts to prevent similar events in the future, but his organization will collaborate with others to keep raising public awareness.
“The best we can do is to continue to sensitize the people and engage other relevant stakeholders who give approvals, monitor developments and so on”, he stated.
