The Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. Christopher Musa, has reiterated the crucial role of traditional rulers in maintaining national stability, underscoring their position as key partners in ensuring peace across Nigeria. Gen. Musa made this statement during a courtesy visit by the Dein of Agbor Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Dein Keagborekuzi Benjamin Gbenoba I, to the Defense Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, the CDS acknowledged the vital role traditional institutions play in bridging the gap between the military and local communities, fostering trust, and promoting peaceful coexistence. He emphasized that traditional rulers serve as the vanguards of national stability, ensuring that peace is sustained at the grassroots level, which, in turn, contributes to the overall security of the country.
“We see our traditional rulers as key partners in the fight to maintain peace and stability across Nigeria. Their influence and guidance within their communities are instrumental in achieving the Armed Forces’ mandate to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity,” Gen. Musa remarked, according to a statement by the acting Director of Defense Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau.
Gen. Musa further assured the royal father that the military remains committed to collaborating with traditional institutions to address all forms of insecurity in the country. He stressed the military’s readiness to protect the nation on all fronts, ensuring that peace and stability prevail across Nigeria. The CDS expressed his appreciation for Dein’s visit, noting that such engagements strengthen the relationship between the military and traditional authorities.
In his response, Dein Keagborekuzi Benjamin Gbenoba praised the military for its tireless dedication to protecting the country. He commended the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces, acknowledging the immense role they play in ensuring peace, security, and economic stability. The monarch expressed gratitude to Gen. Musa for accepting the apology of the people of Okouma, following the unfortunate incident in March 2024, where military personnel lost their lives.
The Dein’s visit serves as a reminder of the significance of mutual respect and cooperation between traditional institutions and the military in fostering national unity. By working closely together, both parties aim to address security challenges and promote a peaceful environment for economic growth and stability.
