Commercial driver jailed 18 months for stabbing traffic officer

Bello Ibrahim, a commercial cab driver, was given an 18-month prison term on Tuesday by a Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja for injuring a traffic police.

Ibrahim, 29, of Dei-Dei Abuja, was accused by the police of resisting arrest and causing great bodily harm.

The defendant admitted admission to the accusation and asked the court for forgiveness before Judge Saminu Suleiman handed down the sentence.

Suleiman offered the offender the chance to pay a N 60,000 fine and issued a warning to stop committing crimes.

The Judge ordered the convict to pay N160, 000 as compensation to the complainant for his cell phone and medical treatment.

According to the prosecuting attorney, Mr. Chinedu Ogada, the incident was reported on February 16 at Zuba Police Station by traffic officer Alid Oiechara who works at the station.

According to Ogada, the complainant led a squad of police officers for a traffic check on the same day at the Dan Kogi bridge in Zuba, Abuja.

He said that when the complainant was escorting the criminal to the police station, the convict was detained for obstruction and improper parking.

The defendant refused to go to the station after parking the automobile when they arrived in Tungamaje, according to the prosecution.

The prosecutor claimed that right after the defendant attacked the complainant, he dashed to his vehicle and took off with the police officer’s cell phone.

According to Babajide, the complaint was taken urgently to the Minat Hospital for treatment, and the associated medical costs came to N324,000.

He testified in court that the defendant admitted to perpetrating the crime while police were investigating.

The prosecution claimed that the offense was against Sections 245, and 311 of the Penal Code.
