On Wednesday, the Edo House of Assembly started the process of impeaching Mr. Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor. The House stated that he had seven days to reply.
The impeachment notice was announced by Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian (PDP, Ovia North-East 1).
21 out of the 24 legislators signed a petition against Shaibu, according to Aiguobarueghian. The petition was dated March 5.
He clarified that the basis of the petition was the disclosure of government secrets and perjury.
Shaibu is sent by Okada to a new office outside the government residence.
Aiguobarueghian pointed out that more members than the two-thirds threshold required by the constitution signed the petition.
Blessing Agbebaku (PDP, Owan-West), the Speaker of the House, acknowledged receiving the petition.
He gave Mr. Yahaya Omogbai, the house clerk, instructions to deliver the deputy governor’s notice of impeachment.
Additionally, Agbebaku gave the deputy governor seven days to reply to the impeachment notification.
In November of last year, Shaibu formally declared his intention to run in the party’s governorship primary under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP.
But because of his political aspirations, the deputy governor and Governor Godwin Obaseki have been at odds.
Shaibu and former governor Adams Oshiomhole both hail from the Edo North Senatorial District.
At the height of the conflict, he had already requested that an Abuja High Court prevent Obaseki and members of the state House of Assembly from impeaching him.
He later withdrew the case, though.
