Edo Election Showdown: APC Accuses Obaseki of Rigging Plot with Fake Security Forces

As the Edo State governorship election approaches, a fierce battle of accusations has erupted between the main opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC), and the incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki. The APC has accused Obaseki of plotting to rig the September 21 election by deploying fake security personnel dressed in police and military uniforms, allegedly produced by the Edo State Security Network (ESSN).

According to a statement released by the APC Campaign Council’s Media Consultant, Mr. Kassim Afegbua, the governor is preparing to use these disguised agents to intimidate voters and manipulate the election results. The APC claims that a secret meeting at the Edo State Government House solidified these plans, which also involve the procurement of arms for the ESSN.

Afegbua highlighted recent attacks on APC members in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area and Ewohimi as early signs of the alleged plot. He called on the military and police authorities to investigate these claims and prevent any attempt to undermine the democratic process.

In response, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser on Media Projects to Governor Obaseki, dismissed the accusations as baseless and an attempt by the APC to distract from its own plans to rig the election. Osagie argued that the APC, aware of its dwindling popularity, is resorting to fear-mongering and spreading falsehoods.

Osagie also defended the Edo State Security Network, stating that it plays a crucial role in maintaining security at the grassroots level. He accused the APC of trying to discredit the network to pave the way for its own underhanded tactics.

As both sides continue to exchange heated words, the stakes are high for the upcoming election. With allegations of rigging and manipulation swirling, the people of Edo State are left to wonder whether they will witness a free and fair election or a politically charged showdown.
