Elon Musk’s Neuralink brain implant cleared for human trials

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given Neuralink permission to conduct the first human clinical research of implants designed to enable direct brain-to-computer communication, the company announced on Thursday.

Neuralink said on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform Twitter, “We are excited to share that we have received the FDA’s approval to launch our first-in-human clinical study,” in a statement.

Demonstrations by the startup indicated that coin-sized Neuralink prototypes have already been implanted in the skulls of animals.

An early demonstration revealed that a Neuralink disk is substituted for a portion of the skull with the assistance of a surgical robot, and its slender wires are then carefully implanted into the brain.

“It actually fits quite nicely in your skull,” Musk said during a prior presentation.

“It could be under your hair and you wouldn’t know.”

Neuralink previously demonstrated many monkeys “playing” simple video games or navigating a cursor on a screen with their Neuralink implants.

Pigs were used in the technology’s testing as well.

According to Neuralink, enrollment is not currently available for a human clinical trial.

Musk, who recently founded a company focused to creating powerful artificial intelligence, has argued that connecting people’s minds with machines is essential if we want to prevent humanity from being overtaken by AI.

Experts and academics are still hesitant to embrace his idea of symbiotically fusing the human brain with superhuman computing.
