In a remarkable display of integrity, operatives from the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos recently turned down a bribe offer of ₦174 million from notorious internet fraudster Patrick Akpoguma. The 28-year-old suspect had been under investigation for various cybercrimes, including romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud, and identity theft.
He was apprehended following thorough intelligence gathering. During his arrest, Akpoguma, who allegedly defrauded victims of over $500,000, attempted to bribe the officers with a large sum of money in an effort to evade prosecution. However, the police officers rejected the bribe outright, recording the money as evidence and continuing their investigation with unwavering professionalism.
This impressive act of transparency and accountability highlights the significant changes occurring within the Nigerian Police Force under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. Egbetokun, who took office with a clear mandate to reform and modernize the force, has worked tirelessly to instill a culture of integrity. The rejection of such a substantial bribe reflects a broader shift within the NPF, where upholding justice and ethical conduct has become a cornerstone of daily operations.
The IGP’s leadership has been crucial in reforming the police force, emphasizing training and equipping officers to handle complex cases with diligence and respect for the rule of law. These efforts have resulted in notable improvements in crime management and investigation.
For instance, under Egbetokun’s guidance, there has been a significant reduction in corruption within the force, contributing to an increase in public confidence. Citizens are now more inclined to trust that the police will act impartially and in accordance with the law, without yielding to external pressures.
Furthermore, technological advancements have been integrated into policing methods, enabling more effective tracking of cybercrimes, kidnappings, and other serious offenses. This adoption of technology has enhanced the police’s ability to respond swiftly to emergencies and conduct investigations with greater precision. The NPF’s expanded use of surveillance tools and data analytics is proving instrumental in addressing sophisticated crimes, including fraud, human trafficking, and terrorism.
Through these sustained efforts, IGP Kayode Egbetokun is making a lasting impact on the Nigerian Police Force, creating an environment where transparency, diligence, and accountability guide every police operation.
