Flood: FG Urges Riverine Communities in Benue, Niger to Relocate to Higher Ground

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has advised communities along the Rivers Benue and Niger to relocate to higher ground due to rising water levels caused by persistent rainfall.

In a statement on Thursday, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, emphasized the urgent need for evacuation, particularly for residents in Makurdi and other riverine areas. He noted that water levels have reached dangerous thresholds, with key monitoring stations such as Lokoja, Umaisha, Makurdi, and Ibbi reporting levels exceeding nine meters between October 9 and 15.

Mohammed warned that areas along the riverbanks are at high risk of flooding and urged immediate action to prevent potential disasters.
