From Pain at the Pump to CNG Savings: Khalil Suleiman Halilu’s Mission to Make Rideshare Greener and Cheaper

Khalil Suleiman Halilu serves as the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s pursuit of technological advancement and sustainable energy solutions. Under his leadership, NASENI has launched transformative projects addressing pressing issues, especially in the energy sector and transportation.

One of Halilu’s significant achievements is the recent introduction of the MY-CNG App, a mobile application aimed at facilitating the conversion of e-hailing vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This initiative directly aligns with the presidential agenda for gas utilization in Nigeria, promoting CNG as a more sustainable and affordable fuel alternative for drivers in the growing rideshare market, which includes platforms like Uber and Bolt.

The app embodies Halilu’s vision of integrating technology into practical solutions, making a substantial impact in an industry that significantly influences urban transportation. During the app’s launch, Halilu emphasized the importance of the Presidential CNG Initiative’s (Pi-CNG) Conversion Incentive Programme in fostering a gas revolution in Nigeria.

He presented a compelling narrative about the economic and environmental benefits of transitioning to CNG, highlighting the initiative’s potential to significantly reduce transportation costs — by as much as 70% — and provide considerable savings for vehicle owners. Through offering a 50% discount on conversion costs for drivers, Halilu and NASENI are not only promoting a cleaner energy source but also easing the financial burden on drivers coping with escalating fuel prices.
