In a swift and compassionate response to the tragic motor accident that claimed the lives of five police officers, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the disbursement of N12.5 million in relief funds to the affected families. The accident, which occurred on September 24, 2024, along the Zaria-Kano Expressway in Karfi Kura, involved officers who were returning from Edo Elections Special Duty to Kano State Command.
According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP has sanctioned the immediate payment of N10 million to the families of the deceased officers, acknowledging their profound loss and ensuring they receive essential financial support during this difficult time. The tragic accident not only took the lives of five officers but also left 11 others hospitalized, sparking a comprehensive response from the Nigeria Police Force.
Of the 11 injured, eight have been successfully discharged after receiving medical treatment, while three are still undergoing recovery. In light of this, IGP Egbetokun has also approved an additional N2 million for the officers still in treatment, ensuring that they receive the necessary medical care to facilitate their recovery. Furthermore, officers who have been discharged will receive N500,000 each as part of the compensation package.
The IGP’s actions underscore the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to supporting its officers and their families in moments of tragedy and hardship. IGP Egbetokun, in his statement, extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed his hope for the swift recovery of those still receiving medical attention.
