Man stabs 23-year-old debtor to death in Lagos
Bitrus Wurawa has been charged by the Lagos State Police Command with murdering 23-year-old Ezekiel Yohana at Kara Market in the state’s Ibeju-Lekki neighborhood with a jackknife.
On Thursday, Wurawa was charged with one count of attempting a murder in front of Magistrate P. E. Nwaka.
According to information obtained by our reporter, the deceased borrowed N14,000 from the defendant in January with the intention of repaying him in a few weeks. Despite the defendant’s repeated requests, the dead failed to do so.
On a fateful day, they are claimed to have met at Kara Market, where Yohana allegedly begged for him money.
The defendant is accused of grabbing the deceased’s knife during the fight that followed, stabbing him in the hand and back with it.
Witnesses who observed the victim bleeding allegedly hurried him to the Epe General Hospital, where the attending physician pronounced him dead.
According to reports, one Omotayo reported the crime to the Akodo Police Division, which then forwarded it to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba.
Thomas Nurudeen, the prosecution, said in court that the defendant committed the offense on March 8, 2023.
He added that the offense violated Section 222 and was penalized by Section 233 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws of Nigeria, 2015.
The charge read, “That you, Bitrus Wurawa, on March 18, 2023, around 6.23 pm at Kara Market, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did unlawfully kill one Ezekiel Yohana, 23. by stabbing him with a jackknife.”
In order to get legal counsel from the Directorate of Public Prosecution, Nurudeen asked the court to remand the defendant to jail.
In order to await legal counsel from the DPP, the magistrate, Nwaka, remanded the defendant to the Ikoyi Correctional Center.
The case was postponed until May 5, 2023 by Nwaka.
