Some young people have assembled in Lagos to protest the purchase of SUVs for National Assembly MPs.
The youngsters who gathered in large numbers in Lagos’ Ikeja neighborhood on Monday brandished banners and chanted slogans such as ‘Fund education not SUVs,’ ‘Pay living wage not SUVs,’ and ‘Fund hospitals not SUVs,’ among others.
Protesters claim that “lawmakers buying SUVs with public funds is insensitive when the majority are suffering.”
According to one of the demonstrators, Juwon Sanyaolu, “workers are still battling for a living wage because the N33,000 minimum wage is not sustainable, but we have people at NASS taking delivery of exotic vehicles worth about N160 billion.” Students are dropping out of school due to high tuition. It’s impolite.”
“They’re the ones receiving hardship allowance,” he added. What are their difficulties? “How much effort are they putting in?”
PROPOLITICS announced on Sunday that legislators in the Green Chamber had begun receiving their SUVs.
Similarly, the first batch of SUVs would be delivered to parliamentarians in the Red Chamber this week.
The Social Economic Rights and Accountability Project has petitioned a Federal High Court in Lagos to prevent the legislators from taking receipt of the SUVs awaiting the hearing and conclusion of the organization’s motions for injunction.
