The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a series of thunderstorms and rainy weather conditions across the country from Sunday to Tuesday. In an advisory released on Saturday, NiMet urged the public to take necessary precautions as strong winds may precede the rains, particularly in areas prone to thunderstorms.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook, Nigerians should prepare for thunderstorms starting on Sunday morning over regions including Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Jigawa, Taraba, and Kaduna states. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected to extend to Zamfara, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, Yobe, and additional areas in the previously mentioned states.
“Thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of the central states such as Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benue, and Niger states during the morning hours,” NiMet stated. “In the afternoon, areas including Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and the FCT are likely to experience continued thunderstorms.”
Southern cities are also forecasted to experience morning rains, particularly in Imo, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Lagos states. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms and rains are predicted to affect Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Lagos states.
On Monday, NiMet predicts early morning thunderstorms over Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Kaduna states. The afternoon and evening periods are expected to bring thunderstorms to Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Bauchi, and Kaduna states.
For the central states, Monday morning thunderstorms are expected over Plateau, the FCT, and Nasarawa, with continued stormy weather in the afternoon and evening in Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the FCT. Southern states like Ekiti, Imo, and Cross River will see morning rains, with prospects for afternoon and evening rains in Abia, Imo, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states.
On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are anticipated over Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, and Kaduna states, spreading across the northern region later in the day. The central states, including the FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Niger, will also see morning thunderstorms, with continued stormy conditions in the afternoon and evening. The southern region is forecasted to have cloudy skies with morning rains in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by afternoon and evening rains throughout the area.
NiMet has advised the public to be cautious and stay informed as strong winds may precede the thunderstorms. The agency also urged airline operators to obtain updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning and safe operations.
