Northern States Plunged into Darkness as National Grid Collapses Again

Nine Northern Nigerian states, including Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Benue, Katsina, Taraba, Gombe, and parts of Borno and Nasarawa, have been affected by a fresh collapse of the National Grid. This marks the fourth collapse in less than two weeks, leaving millions of residents without power.

The development was confirmed by Kunle Olubiyo, President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, in a statement on Monday night. He expressed concern over the grid failures, labeling the blackout across Northern states a “global embarrassment” and calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare an emergency in the power sector.

The Nigerian authorities are yet to provide an official statement about this latest collapse. However, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) previously attributed a recent outage to a transformer explosion at the Jebba transmission station.

The recurring grid collapses are raising alarms about the stability of the nation’s electricity infrastructure, which continues to affect businesses and daily life in the affected regions.
