Peter Obi Warns Supporters Against Insulting Kenneth Okonkwo Following Political Split

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has called for civility from his supporters after Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent former spokesperson for the party, announced his departure. Okonkwo, citing dissatisfaction with Obi’s handling of internal party crises and a lack of confidence in the party’s ability to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, criticized Obi and decided to sever ties with the Labour Party.

In response to Okonkwo’s departure, which sparked a wave of negative reactions from some of Obi’s followers, Obi took to social media to address the situation. He emphasized that despite their differences, Okonkwo remains a cherished ally and urged his supporters to avoid derogatory remarks.

Obi’s statement, posted on July 29, 2024, highlighted his enduring respect for Okonkwo. He stated, “Barrister Okonkwo remains my beloved brother and a trusted ally. I sternly caution against referring to him as a mole or making any negative remarks.”

Obi acknowledged the inevitability of differing opinions within any organization and stressed the importance of respectful discourse. “Disagreements and differing views are natural, and it is crucial to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to personal attacks,” he added.

This situation further complicates the ongoing challenges within the Labour Party, as Okonkwo had previously voiced concerns about the party’s integrity and transparency.
