Political tensions in Rivers State have reached a boiling point as leaders from Amaewhule, Obio, and Akpor localities gathered today for a solidarity march in support of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The march, which began at the Rumueme Civic Center and proceeded along Ikwerre road, saw prominent figures such as Ogundu Chinda, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Martin Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and George Ariolu, former Council Chairman, leading the charge.
The demonstration comes amidst a backdrop of escalating unrest, highlighted by recent protests that paralyzed the Port Harcourt airport, leaving travelers stranded. The IPO community women spearheaded the airport blockade, protesting against perceived injustices.
George Ariolu addressed the gathering, emphasizing their stance on upholding peace and order in the state. “There is no peace without justice,” he proclaimed, echoing sentiments expressed by Governor Wike. “We support governance by law, not by discretion or impunity. The Inspector General of Police has the mandate to restore peace, and we stand behind his efforts,” Ariolu affirmed.
The solidarity march underscores deep-seated political divisions in Rivers State, where governance issues have sparked widespread discontent. Amid calls for adherence to the rule of law, demonstrators urged public officials to respect legal frameworks and refrain from actions that could destabilize the region.
As tensions continue to simmer, the state remains a focal point of national attention, with stakeholders closely monitoring developments. The outcome of today’s march may serve as a crucial indicator of future political dynamics in the embattled region.
