The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, continues to emphasize the importance of fostering unity among Nigeria’s ethnic groups, particularly within the Tiv community. At the Tiv Cultural Fiesta 2024 held at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, Akume highlighted the role of collective solidarity in navigating Nigeria’s multicultural challenges.
Themed “Tiv Heritage: Promoting Unity, Preserving Culture and Traditions,” the event brought together over 1,000 Tiv individuals, celebrating their heritage while advocating for inclusivity and mutual understanding. Akume’s call for unity aligns with Nigeria’s broader socio-political landscape, where harmony among the country’s 250+ ethnic groups is increasingly vital.
Speaking at the event, Akume stressed that unity within the Tiv community would elevate its recognition on a national scale, especially under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which prioritizes ethnic equity. Research supports his assertion, with studies indicating that cultural events like the fiesta strengthen communal ties and promote collaborative efforts for shared objectives.
Tiv Community President Hon. Steven Terfa Uzer echoed Akume’s sentiments, urging members to overcome divisions and focus on collective progress. A cornerstone of these efforts is the Ayatutu House project, a planned communal hub in Lagos designed to encourage cultural exchange and collaboration among Tiv people.
The event drew traditional leaders, political figures, and community members, showcasing the strength of the Tiv heritage and its potential as a model for national unity. Akume’s advocacy reaffirms his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s diversity into a foundation for inclusive growth and shared purpose.
