Despite Nigeria’s continued security issues, the push for State Policing has received broad support from legislators, governors, and civil society organizations. On April 22, President Bola Tinubu will open a one-day national discussion about state police and security, which is being hosted by the House of Representatives.
The goal, according to House spokeswoman Akintunde Rotimi, is to promote a dialogue that is inclusive and emphasizes the incorporation of public viewpoints while discussing the advantages and challenges of state police.
The House of Representatives, FCDO/UKAID, the Policy and Legal Advocacy Center (PLAC), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are collaborating on this project.
According to Rotimi, the event’s goal is to develop institutional and legislative frameworks, as well as model suggestions, to improve state policing’s application in Nigeria.
He stated, as reported by The Nation: “This dialogue complements the president’s ongoing efforts to address the current security challenges in Nigeria and is aligned with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly House of Representatives, which seeks to develop legislative measures to address them.”
To achieve best results, modernize and fortify the nation’s security framework.
“Insecurity in Nigeria demands urgent action and collective responsibility,” the speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, was quoted by him as highlighting the significance of the national dialogue.
He underscored that the impending discourse over national security and the creation of state police provide a crucial chance for group engagement, substantive discourse, and the development of workable policies.
Held in the Abuja Continental Hotel (previously Sheraton Hotel & Tower), the event will be graced by Senate President Godwill Akpabio.
Leading different dialogue parts will be former Heads of State Abdulsalami Abubakar and former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Rotimi declared, “Let us take advantage of this chance to fortify our security framework and guarantee the security and welfare of every Nigerian.”
