Trump appeals $5m verdict in sexual abuse trial

Former US President Donald Trump filed a notice of appeal in response to a New York jury’s finding that he was responsible for sexually assaulting and defaming author E. Jean Carroll.

The former Elle magazine journalist sued Trump for defamation and violence last year. After the New York State Adult Survivors Act went into force, victims of sexual assault had a year to file a lawsuit against the accused abusers, even if the incidents may have occurred decades before.

The action was dubbed a “scam” and Carroll a “nut job” by Trump, who angrily denied the accusations.
Following the trial’s many weeks, Trump was found guilty of sexual assault but not rape on Tuesday by a jury of nine. In addition, he was held responsible for defamation for labeling her accusations a “hoax”.

NBC News reports that ex-president Donald Trump appealed “all adverse orders, rulings, decrees, decisions, opinions, memoranda, conclusions or findings” made by the presiding judge in documents submitted on Thursday to a federal court in Manhattan by Trump’s attorney, Joe Tacopina.

Trump openly criticized the decision on Wednesday, calling it a “disgrace” and a “sham” in a video posted on his Truth Social platform. In the article, he also disparaged Lewis Kaplan, the judge who was presided over, calling him a “terrible person” and “completely biased.”
