Wike, El-Rufai, Oyetola make list as Akpabio unveils ministerial nominees today

Nyesom Wike, the outgoing governor of Rivers State, and Nasir El-Rufai, a colleague from Kaduna, are on the list of candidates for cabinet positions.

President Bola Tinubu reportedly sent the Senate the list of ministers in the early hours of Thursday, according to Propolitics.

The list is being released two days before the President’s deadline, as required under the ninth Assembly’s amendments to the constitution.

According to the Ninth Senate’s amendment to the 1999 constitution, Tinubu has just two days left before the President must announce the members of his cabinet.

According to Section 42 of the Constitution, “(a) the nomination of any individual to the office of a Minister should be made within sixty days after the date the President has taken the oath of office for confirmation by the Senate;

(b) women must make up at least 10% of those selected as ministers:

With the proviso that the President may name a minister at any other point in his term, and that choice is subject to Senate approval.

The law further stipulates that the President must choose at least one minister from each of the 36 federation-member states.

The real ministerial list of President Bola Tinubu would be revealed today, according to Jackson Udom, the Senate President’s media adviser.

He added advised Nigerians to refrain from speculation and to hold off till the nominations were announced.

Commenting on the purported social media list, he said, “I saw the purported list too just like every other person did, let’s wait till tomorrow (today). Don’t speculate, tomorrow (today), you’ll see the list.”

Propolitics also learned that prominent economist Olawale Edun, Adebayo Adelabu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Betta Edu, the APC’s female leader, were all included in the list.

Ali Pate, the former health minister under Goodluck Jonathan who just turned down a position abroad, is also on the list.

Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Ben Ayade, a former governor of Cross River, Gboyega Oyetola, a colleague from Osun State, and Dele Alake, the president’s special adviser on media, strategy, and special duties, are other members of the president’s cabinet.

Propolitics discovered that the President had just sent the names—no portfolios had been included.

There have been protests regarding the ministerial list, especially in light of Tinubu’s protracted quiet on the subject.

Many Nigerians have voiced anxiety and alarm about the President’s cabinet’s protracted composition, particularly in light of Tinubu’s post-election promise to Nigerians that he would get started right away.

In addition, he had pledged to provide a respectable form of government with qualified individuals in a range of roles within the execution realm.

In a statement on March 16, Tinubu said he would set up a “government of national competence.

“There has been talk of a government of national unity. My aim is higher than that. I seek a government of national competence. In selecting my government, I shall not be weighed down by considerations extraneous to ability and performance.”

The delay in announcing the cabinet ministers has led to the emergence of several lists of ministers, which the government itself disowned.
